Suicidal ideation is characterised by symptoms of

  • Talking about suicide or being preoccupied by death

  • Obtaining the means to commit suicide

  • Withdrawing from social contact

  • Having mood swings

  • Feeling trapped or hopeless

  • Increased use of alcohol or drugs and risk-taking behaviours

  • Change in normal routine, including eating or sleeping patterns

  • Giving away belongings or getting affairs in order
